Quick kadhi chawal dinner

You made the awful sin of cancelling the Chulha tiffin (www.chulha.co.in)? Or (in most cases) we dont deliver to your doorstep. You are also hungry and its already a sinful hour in the night. Treat yourself to a quickfire kadhi chawal! Yep...the preparation time is hardly 5-10 minutes and the food will be ready by the time you freshen up! So off we go.... (few are optional and if you dont have them....it really doesnt matter)

Ingredients (for 2 people):

Besan kadhi
  1. 2 tbsp besan (gram flour)
  2. 1/2 cup curd (dump in any water that the curd may have as well)
  3. Water
  4. 1 tbsp oil for cooking
  5. Salt (to taste)
  6. Red pepper (optional, to taste)
  7. Jeera (Optional!)
  8. 1/2 tsp Hing (Asafoetida)(Optional)
  9. 1-2 tsp ghee (Optional)
  10. 1 tomato (Optional)
  11. 1 onion (Optional)

Rice
  1. 1 cup rice
  2. 1/2 tsp oil (This prevents rice from sticking in the cooker)
  3. 2 cups water

Procedure (I am giving this step wise so that you can time it yourself. Just ignore the steps if you are not using the ingredients in those steps)

  1. Chop onion and tomato in whichever shape and size you want....just small enough.
  2. Take besan in a bowl and add the curds. Add some water and mix so that no lumps are formed.
  3. Take a frying pan and put the oil for cooking to heat.
  4. Add jeera and once it starts to fry, add the onions. Let them sit for a little while (or not depending on your time and patience).
  5. Add the besan, curd mix into the pan. Add water in sufficient quantity and salt. (In case you are not having the hing then add the red pepper as well).
  6. Let the kadhi cook on medium flame.
  7. Take a cooker and keep it on stove. Add the oil for rice into it.
  8. Add the rice and water once the oil is a little hot.
  9. Close the lid and let the rice cook.
  10. Check on the kadhi once to make sure it does not need more water...or just add more if you feel like. Remember it will thicken up once the besan cooks.
  11. Go and freshen up.
  12. Check on the kadhi and rice.
  13. In a small pan, take the ghee, hing and red pepper (if not already used) and heat them on a high flame till the hing starts to sputter.
  14. Add this to the cooked kadhi as a tadka.
  15. Food is ready!

The above is a very very basic quickfire kadhi chawal procedure. Of course the real thing is a lot more elaborate and time intensive but Chulha is their for that...right ;-)
